Barrier Systems

Creating an acoustically tight envelope around activities and space may be important to establishing the correct acoustical environment. Isolating people and activities can be an evasive task. A slight violation of the "envelope" that isolates a noise source or endeavors to create an acoustically isolated space will compromise the best of design intentions. A 0.3% "leak" (less than ½ of 1%!) in an otherwise complete envelope will destroy 75% of the perceived barrier performance of that system. It is not just a "line-of-sight" (see-through) violation, but also the equal in the barrier performance of alternative paths of sound - weak points, if you will.

The importance of this is discussed in our NOISE ISOLATION section.

In most space a tight seal and attention to construction details and their execution will accomplish this. In many cases the barrier performance of the ceiling will need to be enhanced. This can be accomplished with:

  • Plenum barrier systems either vertical or horizontal.
  • Door seals.
  • Sound traps at return air grills.
